Tribler's Gossip protocol is based on the UDP port 7062. Tribler uses a persistent connection to the peers who it communicates with. The connection is usually implicit, via IP address and port but can be explicit and tied to an authentication. The connection persists throughout the duration of the request, and is therefore not a tracker. Other than the directory (to which no extra data must be passed) and the port, there is no protocol between the source and the destination in the actual sharing of data. The actual downloading of the data from the source is accomplished through the BitTorrent protocol (see below, Peer Exchange).
When a connection is established, a coordinator is selected to act as a master and select the port to which the client connects and to maintain the connection on behalf of the client. The coordinator selects peers based on the port and, if the main tracker is not working, the "best" peers available will be presented as seeds. Any peer who wants to be a seed will be given a task to do. The peers can decide whether to offer to serve content or whether to participate in the DHT search.
Immediately after failure to complete the file as a seed, peers are selected through an eXeem-like protocol to provide a downloader with peers that can finish the job. This allows a peer to download from a seed directly, regardless of the file size. The peers are kept in memory until they find the next file, at which point the connections are closed and thus released from memory.
Peer Exchange is a BEP 8 extension with no defined maximum number of peers. Peers announce their capabilities to the coordinator on behalf of the client. The coordinator finds all requests in the peer pool and forks them to the selected peers. The authority of the peers to complete the downloads is based on who they announce as being the fastest downloader, behind the authority of the coordinator and by the size of the file they announce. The actual download of data will occur when the peers find the next file. Once all peers have completed their download, the coordinator closes the connection and the peers will all be eliminated from memory. d2c66b5586
