In older adults, stereotype activation can come about through direct or indirect means, such as through exposure to information or exposure to the perceived activities and behaviors of others. In this review, we seek to highlight the role of stereotype activation on cognitive and affective processes, as well as on engagement in social and physical activities.
The first section of this review describes research that directly examines stereotype activation in older adults. The second section examines stereotype activation by asking, “How can we create positive stereotypes of aging that will facilitate the life skills and positive health behaviors of older adults?” In the third section, we examine the role that stereotype activation can have in the social and physical activities of older adults. The fourth section summarizes limitations to studies related to stereotype activation, and we conclude with suggestions for future directions.
