Still, though, it was not the function of the Indian peoples who had many strong gods and were practising much magic to the point of magical illusion and even precognition, to aspire to develop a sort of religion of science. To the Indian and iniquitous scientific spirit, the highest religion is the common sense of being, the practical sense of what is useful and true for life. This natural science is no longer a hypothesis or a doctrine to be verified or falsified by tests, but has become a view of the world itself and its process or apportionment of provinces. This science, which is inseparable from practical life and economic affairs, knew its true source but was unacquainted with the name of the true source. It knew that the line of progress was determined by the self-regulating will of good and evil. This is the truth which all people of conscience found out long ago and the wise are wont to proclaim in all parts of the world. They invited the ignorant to learn the self-regulating principles of the universe from the vulgar path of experience and copying each other. The senses of sensation, observation, and experience revealed to the Indians the natural harmony and motion of the world. They wanted to teach the vulgar that the world was a living, active thing; that it was not a self-moving thing like a corpse; that it had its definite, natural, and analogical movement. So they proscribed and predicted the future. So they asked: « what will become of the earth, its rivers, plants and mountains? « What will become of us and of our food? » When from previous experience, they had clear notions about this they had an abundance of clear notions. These notions were false. Illusions are to be avoided, but they are not to be entirely renounced like the abominable modern idea that all ideas should be eliminated which are derived from past history.
